About the Dogs

At one point in the great history of the North Shore the mail was delivered by sled dogs. The dogs were depended on to keep the people of the North Shore in touch with the outside world. A good dog team has proven to be one of the most reliable forms of winter travel. In Nome, Alaska sled dogs saved lives when much needed medicine was hundreds of miles away and weather conditions prevented all other forms of travel. Twenty dogs team relayed 674 miles in under six days to bring the much need medicine and saved many in the town. This is what has inspired the Iditarod dog race considered by many the toughest race around.

My husband and I have found travel by dogsled to be a unique experience and the Boundary Waters the perfect setting. Here motors are not allowed leaving snowshoe, ski, or dogsled as the only forms of travel. With the gear involved in ice fishing, sled dogs are the way to go. We have twelve loyal dogs that have brought us to the best fishing I have ever experienced. Our dogs are Alaskan Huskies, who have genetic connections to those racing the Iditarod. They are hard working, friendly, and for most of the day quit. They get really excited as we are hooking them up and once in motion they are happy to run. Every now and then we will stop to pet the dogs and give them a break. They are ready to go often before we are. Once we are at the spot they are happy to take in the surroundings and relax as you can see in the picture above.
